“He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” — Micah 6:8
Welcome to Kitchen and Compass. I’m James, and I’m glad you’ve found your way to my corner of the internet.
The Compass (The Journey)
I’ve spent a good portion of my life navigating different paths. Before settling in the beautiful Appalachian air of Bristol, Virginia, I served in the military, with time stationed at Fort Eustis, VA and Fort Richardson. Those years taught me the value of a good map, a steady hand, and the importance of the journey itself.
These days, the “Compass” points toward road trips with my wife, Christy. Whether we are exploring the coastal beauty of Florida or finding peace in a quiet mountain town, we believe the best way to see the world is with a sense of wonder and a spirit of adventure.
The Kitchen (The Table)
If the Compass is about the journey, the Kitchen is about the destination. I’m a firm believer that life’s best moments happen around a table. I’m an avid home cook and a dedicated fan of local, non-chain restaurants. You won’t find any decaf in my mug—I love coffee for the flavor, and I love a meal that tells a story.
The True North (The Faith)
Most importantly, I am a Follower of Christ. My faith is the “True North” that keeps me grounded. As it says in Psalm 32:8:
“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.”
This blog isn’t just about food or travel; it’s about stewardship, fellowship, and appreciating the gifts we’ve been given.
Life at Home
When I’m not in the kitchen or on the road, you can usually find me practicing Tai Chi, cheering on the Steelers, or out for a walk with our dog, Zippy.
I hope the stories and recipes here encourage you to find your own path, try a new flavor, and trust the Guide who knows the way.
