The Weight of Your Words

The Weight of Your Words

Words aren’t just noise. They’re tools. You can use them to build something that lasts, or you can use them to burn a bridge to the ground. If you’re following Christ, the mission is clear: use your voice to reflect His truth.

Most people have heard of the “five love languages.” Words of affirmation is a big one. But this isn’t about empty flattery or blowing smoke. It’s about rooting your speech in genuine love. It’s about reminding the people in your life—especially Christy or a close friend—of their God-given value.

Check the Source

The Bible doesn’t mince words here. Matthew 12:34 tells us that our mouth speaks what the heart is full of. If your heart is a wreck of bitterness and noise, that’s what’s going to spill out when you speak.

Cultivating a heart aligned with the Word isn’t optional; it’s the foundation. When we affirm someone, we’re mirroring God’s character. He calls us loved and valuable. We should be doing the same for others.

Build, Don’t Break

In a world that loves to criticize and tear down, being a source of encouragement makes you an outlier. 1 Thessalonians 5:11 says to “encourage one another and build each other up.”

Next time you’re about to speak, pause. Ask yourself if your voice is delivering what is true, kind, and necessary. Don’t just offer empty positivity. Point people toward hope and remind them of what they’re capable of. Even the tone we use with Zippy matters—peace should be the baseline.

Speak Life

Commit to speaking life this week. Whether it’s a stranger at the store or your family at the dinner table, choose to use your voice to strengthen the bond. It’s a simple shift that reflects the love of Christ better than any polished speech ever could.

“Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.” — Proverbs 18:21
