Drop the Fig Leaves

Drop the Fig Leaves

We all know the story of the Fall in Genesis. But look closer at what happened right after the bite. A reflex was born, and we are still suffering from it today.

Genesis 3:7 tells us that their eyes were opened, they realized they were naked, and they sewed fig leaves together to cover themselves.

Before sin, there was no shame. Afterward, the immediate reaction was fear of exposure. They didn’t run to God; they hid. They didn’t ask for help; they made coverings.

We still do this. We just call them psychological defenses. We hide because we believe a lie: If they really see me, they won’t love me.

The Catalog of Disguises

Psychologists call them defense mechanisms. The Bible calls them hiding. They are modern-day fig leaves used to cover our shame. See which outfit you wear most often:

  • Perfectionism: You believe if you do everything right, you can’t be criticized. The lie is “If I am flawless, I am safe.” The reality is you end up exhausting and isolating yourself.
  • Busywork: You stay in constant motion to outrun the silence. The lie is “If I am productive, I am valuable.” The reality is you are starving your soul with speed.
  • Cynicism & Humor: You use sarcasm or intellect as a shield. The lie is “If I don’t care, I can’t be hurt.” The reality is your shield keeps out pain, but it also keeps out love.
  • Victimhood: You hide behind your wounds and define yourself by what happened to you. The lie is “If I am powerless, I can’t be blamed.” The reality is you surrender your agency.

The Heavy Cost of Hiding

Fig leaves make terrible clothing. They are scratchy, they dry up, and they constantly need to be repaired. Living behind a defense mechanism is exhausting.

Proverbs 28:13 reminds us that he who conceals his sins does not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy. God is not interested in the version of you that you stitched together. He wants the real you.

The Divine Exchange

The best part of the Eden story is God’s response. He didn’t scream at them. He didn’t rip the leaves off to shame them. He did something tender.

“The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them.” — Genesis 3:21

God looked at their flimsy, homemade attempt to cover their shame and replaced it with something permanent. He provided a sacrifice to cover them effectively.

Stop trying to cover yourself with your own works and defenses. You can stop sewing now. You are already covered.
