Whose Approval Are You Chasing?

Whose Approval Are You Chasing?

The mid-morning sun hits the kitchen counter right around the time the first real cup of coffee is poured. Outside, Zippy is patrolling the perimeter of the backyard fence like he’s on guard duty, taking his self-appointed job deadly serious. Christy is sitting across the table, quiet, soaking in the stillness before the world cranks up its usual racket.

It’s easy to feel steady in those quiet moments.

The trouble starts the second you step out the front door and start worrying about what everyone else thinks of you.

The Exhaustion of People-Pleasing

Most folks spend their entire lives auditioning for people who aren’t even paying attention.

You soften the truth so nobody gets offended. You nod along with foolishness to keep the peace. You bend yourself into a pretzel trying to make sure a crowd of strangers, coworkers, or internet critics nods in approval.

It’s a miserable way to live. And worse, it’s a trap.

Why do we tell actors to “break a leg”? Because every play has a cast. It’s corny, but think about it: if you spend your life performing on a stage for an audience, you’re bound to end up crippled by their expectations.

The Dividing Line

Paul didn’t mince words about this. He drew a hard line in the dirt:

“For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.”
Galatians 1:10

That’s not corporate advice. That’s a field order.

You cannot serve two masters. You’re either anchored in the truth, or you’re drifting with whatever cultural wind happens to blow through town this week. Seeking God’s approval means speaking the truth in love—even when that truth cuts against the grain and costs you a few fragile friendships.

Honesty isn’t cruel, but it is firm.

Check Your Compass

Take a look at where you spent your energy this week. Were you walking upright before God, or were you looking over your shoulder to see who was clapping?

Pick your allegiance. Love your family fiercely. Feed the dog. Drink your coffee without rushing. And stop handing the steering wheel of your life over to people who don’t even know where they’re going themselves.

Walk with Christ, tell the truth, and let the chips fall where they may.
