Legacy Beyond Blood

Legacy Beyond Blood

Christy and I never had children. Our house has been filled with the sound of paws, not the patter of little feet. Zippy is our focus, and that’s the path we walked.

But not having kids doesn’t mean you ignore the blueprint God laid out for the family. Truth is truth, whether you’re changing diapers or just watching the next generation from the sidelines. I can only reflect on what the Word says about the heavy lift of parenting.

Honor and Boundaries

The Word is direct: children are called to obey and honor their parents. It isn’t just about following rules; it’s about alignment. When a home has respect, it functions. But that’s a two-way street.

Paul warns fathers not to embitter their children. You don’t lead through frustration or high-pressure tactics. You lead with grace. If you break their spirit, you’ve failed the mission.

The Responsibility of Witness

Parenting isn’t about being perfect; it’s about being a pointer. The goal is to show a glimpse of the Father’s unconditional love. Whether it’s through formal teaching or just how you handle a burnt dinner, you’re showing them what God looks like.

Even for those of us without kids, we have a responsibility to the younger people in our lives to model a faith that is gritty, honest, and grounded in the Word.

A Reflection of the Father

Jesus pointed out that even flawed human parents know how to give good gifts. If we, in our mess, want the best for those under our care, how much more does God want for us? Every family bond—no matter how it’s structured—is meant to be a reflection of that divine care.

“Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. ‘Honor your father and mother’—which is the first commandment with a promise—‘so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.’” — Ephesians 6:1-3
