The Weight of Your Words

The Weight of Your Words

Communication isn’t just about making noise. It’s the bedrock of how we build trust or tear it down. The New Testament sets a high bar for how we handle our tongues—one marked by wisdom, not just impulse.

Seasoned with Salt

Sharing your mind is easy. Considering the impact of those words is the hard work. Truth without grace is just a hammer, and grace without truth is a lie. We need both.

“Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.” Colossians 4:6

Being “seasoned with salt” means adding value and preserving integrity. It’s not about being a people-pleaser. It’s about sharing truth in a way that reflects God’s love and actually helps the other person grow.

Shut Up and Listen

Most of us are too busy planning our comeback to actually hear what’s being said. True communication starts with listening—not just catching the words, but understanding the heart behind them. James tells us to be quick to listen and slow to speak.

“My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.” James 1:19

The Bottom Line

How we speak is a reflection of our faith. Our words have the power to heal or to hammer. I’d rather use mine as instruments of grace. It’s about creating an environment where trust and respect can actually thrive, whether I’m at home with Christy and Zippy or out on the road.

Speak truth in love.
