Pursued by Grace
The world focuses on the majority, the crowd, and the numbers. But God’s economy doesn’t work like a standard spreadsheet. The Parable of the Lost Sheep in Luke 15:3-7 shows a radically different math. A shepherd leaves ninety-nine safe sheep in the open country to track down the single one that went astray.
By human standards, leaving the majority looks reckless. But God doesn’t divide His focus. To Him, every individual matters fully. He doesn’t give up on the hurting, the wandering, or the lost, no matter how far the trail has gone cold.
The Joy of Reclamation
When the shepherd finds that lost sheep, there is no scolding. There is no grudge about the hard miles spent tracking it down. Instead, he throws it on his shoulders and carries it home to celebrate.
God’s heart breaks for the wanderer, and heaven throws a party when they return. It’s a stark reminder that no one is beyond redemption. Grace covers the distance.
The Mission
This isn’t just a comfort; it’s a direct order. If we claim to follow the Shepherd, we are called to reflect His heart. That means pulling our boots on and going after the ones who are hurting, lost, or in need—taking risks and valuing the individual over the crowd.
Whether we are the ones being pursued through the brush, or the ones called to help bring a wanderer home, the mandate is clear. Keep your eyes open for the one.
“I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.” — Luke 15:7
