The Power of Naming
In the ancient world, a name defined your essence and implied authority. Whoever names you owns you. If you accept the labels the world gives you—Average, Broken, Addict, Failure—you let the world dominate your destiny.
Scripture shows that when God changes a destiny, He changes a name. Jacob became Israel; Simon became Peter. It is time to revoke old authorities and accept the name given by your Creator.
The Graveyard of Labels
Old names are identities formed by trauma, rejection, and mistakes. They script your life unconsciously:
- The Orphan: “I am on my own”.
- The Disappointment: “I never measure up”.
- The Invisible: “My voice doesn’t matter”.
- The Victim: “Life happens to me”.
These names are lies. They describe history, not identity. Agreeing with them anchors you to the enemy.
The White Stone and the New Map
God promises a white stone with a secret, unique name for those who overcome. This identity is based on who He is, not what you have done:
- Instead of Orphan, you are Heir.
- Instead of Unwanted, you are Chosen.
- Instead of Guilty, you are Righteous.
- Instead of Useless, you are Masterpiece (Ephesians 2:10).
This is spiritual warfare, not positive thinking. You are replacing lies with Truth.
Exercise: The Liturgy of Re-Naming
Physically build your new map:
- Divide a paper down the middle.
- Left Side (The Graveyard): Write the negative names you or others have used (e.g., Stupid, Unlovable).
- The Act of Revocation: Use a red pen to draw a line through each lie. Say aloud: “I renounce this name. It has no authority over me.”
- Right Side (The New Creation): Write the Biblical truth next to the crossed-out lie (e.g., Unlovable becomes Beloved).
- Keep it visible: Tape it to your mirror or keep it in your Bible. This is your new birth certificate.
The Way Forward
Old voices will try to return. When they call you a failure, do not agree. Look at your map and declare: “That is not my name. I am a Work in Progress, held by God.” Walk in newness of life.
“To the one who overcomes I will give some of the hidden manna. I will also give that person a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to the one who receives it.” — Revelation 2:17
