Love Your Enemies. Simple? No. Essential? Absolutely.

Love Your Enemies. Simple? No. Essential? Absolutely.

Jesus didn’t mince words in Matthew 5:44.

“But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.”

It’s easy to love the people who buy you coffee or bring a treat for your dog. It’s an entirely different battle when you’re called to show grace to the ones who step on your toes, throw mud at your name, or make your life miserable.

Grace Isn’t Soft. It’s Steel.

Culture tells us to hold grudges. It tells us to sharpen our knives, plot our revenge, or at the very least, write people off forever.

Jesus calls us to a tougher road. Loving your enemies doesn’t mean becoming a doormat. It means refusing to let someone else’s hatred rot your own heart. It takes real grit to respond to malice with mercy. Anyone can lash back; it takes strength to lay the weapon down.

The Daily Battle

  • Stop keeping score. Forgiveness isn’t about ignoring the wrongdoing; it’s about handing the verdict over to God.
  • Pray for them anyway. You can’t sincerely pray for someone’s heart while holding onto the desire to watch them fail.
  • Guard your peace. Don’t trade the calm of a quiet morning for a lifetime of bitter resentment.

It isn’t fast, and it sure isn’t comfortable. But if you want a life defined by truth and peace, it starts by cutting the chain of bitterness right at the source.
