The Gear You Don’t Take Off

The Gear You Don’t Take Off

Most mornings don’t start at dawn around here, and that suits me fine. By mid-morning, the house settles. A fresh cup of coffee is steaming on the counter, Christy is settled in, and Zippy is curled up at my feet, guarding the floorboards like it’s his full-time job.

It’s quiet. But anyone who’s lived long enough knows quiet doesn’t mean safe. Peace isn’t the absence of a fight; it’s being ready when the fight finds you.

Put On the Armor

“Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.”
— Ephesians 6:11

Paul wasn’t writing theory from an air-conditioned office. He was chained to a Roman legionnaire when he penned those words. He heard the clanking iron. He smelled the oiled leather. He knew that going into battle half-dressed gets a soldier killed.

Notice what the verse doesn’t say. It doesn’t say God issues armor for display above the fireplace. It says to put it on. All of it.

You don’t pick and choose your gear based on convenience. You don’t take the shield of faith and leave truth behind because it feels heavy or unpopular. In the trades or out in the field, skipping your safety gear because “it’s just a quick job” is how fingers get lost. Spiritual life isn’t any different. A half-armored believer is just an easy target.

Standing Ground

The objective Paul gives isn’t complex. It’s simple: take your stand.

Not retreat. Not panic. Not build a spreadsheet to analyze the opposition to death. Just plant your boots in the dirt and refuse to budge. The enemy doesn’t always hit you with a frontal assault; the verse calls them “schemes.” Traps, subtle compromises, whispers that chip away at your integrity, your marriage, your peace.

Why do you think the armor has no protection for the back? Because you aren’t designed to turn and run.

Daily Discipline

You don’t wait for the siren to figure out where your gear is.

Start the day grounded. Hold your family close, love your people fiercely, and spend real time in the Word before the noise of the day kicks in. Gird up with truth, buckle on righteousness, and stand firm.

The battle is real, but the gear is tested. Wear it.
