The Willpower Trap
We think sheer grit can force a change in our behavior. It can’t. Willpower has a ceiling.
Behavior follows belief. You don’t act according to what you want to do; you act according to what you believe to be true. To change the action, you have to change the core script underneath.
The Scripts in the Dark
Behind every bad habit is a quiet, underlying lie we tell ourselves. Usually, they’re survival scripts written during tough times:
- “I am unsafe.”
- “I am not enough.”
- “If I don’t control this, it all falls apart.”
You aren’t fighting a habit; you are fighting a belief. Trying to willpower your way out of it is a losing battle.
“You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” — John 8:32
Identify and Replace
True renewal is a contact sport. You don’t just try to stop thinking a negative thought; you capture it, test it, and replace it with the truth.
- The Lie: “I must be perfect to be accepted.”
- The Truth: Your value isn’t tied to your performance.
- The Lie: “I can’t trust anyone.”
- The Truth: Isolation is a shield, but it’s also a prison.
We are told to “take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” (2 Corinthians 10:5). That’s how we dismantle the lies.
The Daily Grind
These internal scripts weren’t written overnight, and they won’t be replaced overnight either. It takes daily, relentless repetition to carve out a new path. Stop the lie, speak the truth, and do it again tomorrow. That is how real change is built.
