Standing Out in the Dark
The world can be a dark, noisy place. It is easy to just put your head down, block out the chaos, and try to find some quiet. But isolation isn’t the mission. We are called to something a lot harder: to impact the people around us and reflect a light that isn’t our own.
Our faith isn’t meant to be hidden away under a basket. It’s meant to be lived out where people can actually see it.
Called to Shine
“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.” — Matthew 5:14
Jesus didn’t give an option here. He said we are the light. When we live according to God’s will, our actions should speak volumes to the people around us. It’s not about drawing attention to ourselves or looking for polish. It’s about letting the light of Christ shine through our daily, unvarnished lives so others see it and glorify Him.
Called to Serve
Real impact doesn’t happen by shouting from a soapbox. It happens through service.
“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” — Mark 10:45
If anyone had the right to demand service, it was Jesus. Instead, He rolled up His sleeves, met people where they were, and washed feet. We don’t serve to earn points or favors. We serve because it reflects His heart. It’s the most direct way to show up for people.
Salt and Light
We are also given a clear reminder about our role in the flavor and preservation of the world:
“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again?” — Matthew 5:13
Think about cooking. Flavor matters. Salt preserves, and it enhances what is already there. As the salt of the earth, our job is to enhance the world around us and act as a preservative in a society that is decaying. Light drives away the darkness; salt changes the environment. We are called to do both.
The Mission is Clear
At the end of the day, our purpose comes down to how we treat people. It’s about our actions, our words, and our attitude. Every act of service and every honest word is part of a bigger plan to draw people closer to Him.
Let’s stop blending into the background. Live with intention, stand firm, and be the salt and light you were called to be.
