The Foundation Nobody Wants to Build On
The world loves shortcuts. Walk into any bookstore or scroll any feed, and you’ll find ten thousand gurus selling five-step formulas to master your life, your career, and your mindset.
Most of it is vapor. It’s decorating the second floor of a house that doesn’t have footings poured yet.
Starting at the Beginning
Solomon didn’t mince words. He cut straight to the bone:
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” — Proverbs 1:7
Notice he didn’t say it’s a helpful supplement. He said it’s the beginning.
You don’t get to skip step one and expect the rest of the build to hold. In cooking, you can eyeball the garlic and tweak the seasoning by feel, but baking requires exact chemistry. Cut corners on the leavening agent, and the whole loaf collapses in the oven.
Wisdom works the same way. It isn’t something you wing.
Quiet the Noise
Mid-morning hits. The house is finally still. Christy is settled, Zippy is asleep on the rug, and the coffee in the mug is hot and strong.
It takes deliberate effort to carve out that quiet. The world runs at maximum volume, screaming for attention and pushing its own version of truth. But standing in awe of God requires you to stop moving, drop the pride, and admit you aren’t the smartest entity in the room.
Fools hate that part. A fool wants the reputation of wisdom without submitting to instruction. They want the answers without acknowledging the Authority.
Check the Footings
Respect the order of operations.
Real knowledge doesn’t start with intellectual horsepower, credentials, or life hacks. It begins when you recognize who God is, bow the knee, and let Him set the standard.
Build anywhere else, and you’re just assembling a pile of scrap on shifting sand.
